Most of this site is organized for a first-time reader: recovery, identity, meaning, AI, governed publishing. This page is different. It is for anyone who wants to see the shape underneath that organization, not replace it.
The shape borrows a biological register. Four layers, read in sequence: substrate, the raw computational ground; catalyst, the transformation that turns raw signal into structured meaning; biome, the built environment that meaning comes to inhabit; and ecosystem, the population of agents living in that environment together. Cutting across all four, not stacked above them, are two functions any living system needs: homeostasis, routine self-correction, and immunity, its more specific defense against what does not belong.
The register was chosen for a modest reason: it lets one consistent metaphor carry all four layers, instead of switching vocabulary every time the subject changes. But a question worth sitting with, not settling, is whether that is all it is. A metaphor applied from outside, or a description of something the site is already doing: remembering, correcting, distinguishing itself from what it is not, organizing what it produces into something more than the sum of its posts. This page does not resolve that question. It leaves it open on purpose.

A bridge: Narrative
The one confirmed case of content that does not sit inside a single register but carries something across the seam between two.
The encyclopedia entry Narrative does two jobs in its own definition: it is an interpretive act that makes meaning from what occurred (catalyst), and it becomes the persistent account an institution explains itself through, part of the environment members orient against afterward (biome). Four other candidates were tested against the same standard and none held up on their own terms — this page treats Narrative as a class of one rather than the first of many, until further content proves otherwise.
Cross-cutting: Homeostasis and Immunity
These are not registers. They are functions any of the four registers above can perform. An item tagged with one of these still belongs to a register (or, in a few cases logged during tagging, its register was never determined) — the function names what it is doing, not where it lives.
